The Global Week Ahead: November 27- December 4, 2022
This week, we will be watching closely something that is not on the global calendar: Growing protests across China where protestors are shouting, “Down with the Communist Party! Down with Xi Jinping!” These are unprecedented acts of civil disobedience in Communist China and are the result of growing draconian COVID lockdowns. Markets will be asking: How long will Xi allow the protests in Shanghai, Beijing, and other major cities before instituting tough crack-downs? All this is going on as European Council President Charles Michel visits Beijing to help patch up increasingly rough relations between the EU and China.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron travels to Washington on Wednesday to meet with President Joe Biden. They are expected to discuss not only the state of the war in Ukraine but also growing US-EU tensions on everything from electric vehicle subsidies the US Congress recently approved in the Inflation Reduction Act to EU accusations the US is profiteering off the war.
On the global economic radar screen, markets will look at the US jobs report and the PCE inflation reading. Also, Fed Chair Jay Powell is giving a closely watched speech at the Brooking Institution on Wednesday, the same day the Fed publishes the Beige Book. In Europe, the CPI releases will be the significant focus, along with several speeches by ECB President Christine Lagarde. In Asia, China is expected to release PMIs and Japan has several important economic activity indicators being released.
Here is what we are watching around the world this week. Let us know if you have any questions or if you would like to be added anyone to our mailing list:
